The Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti was today shut down by the management, following a massive protest by the students of the institution.

The Rector, Taiwo Akande gave the directive for the closure of the school due to the lingering strike by the three polytechnic Labour Unions.

That was the situation as the Police drafted to forestall the breakdown of law and Order fired Teargas to disperse the protesting students at the maingate of the institution.

Trouble started when one of the Union held its congress on Monday and resolved to continue with the strike which didnot go down well with students.

The three Unions had been on strike over the leadership style of the Rector which according to them was against their interest.

The protesting Students had gathered at the maingate this morning, carrying placards to register their displeasure on the development.

The Protesters led by the coordinator of the National Association of Nigerian students[NANS] southwest, Sunday Asefon urged the management
to rescind its decision of closing down the school having wasted 11 months last year.
                     
The Vice chairman of NANS in the State, Oluwapelumi Ogunmekun said strike at the institution had disrupted smooth academic activities in the last 1 year.

He alleged the SUG president of the polytechnic of compromising their fate with the management of the institution.

Reacting the SUG President, Oladapo Ajibola dismissed the allegation, stating that the students had gathered this morning to protest the decision of the management to close the school.

Responding the two deputy rectors of the institution, said the school was not closing indefinitely as speculated by the students, adding that management is working on resolving the crisis.

Meanwhile, twenty-one students were arrested and are currently in the police custody in Ado Ekiti.
