Teachers Comply With NUT Directives, Schools Empty In Oyo
Teachers, on Monday, complied with the directive of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, to stay away from classes in Oyo State.
The NUT, on Sunday night, ordered teachers in public primary and secondary schools in Oyo State to commence indefinite strike on Monday.
Various public schools visited in Ibadan, Oyo State, were empty. Students who came to school in the early hours of the day were seen returning to their various homes, while some others gathered discussing the ongoing protest in the state.
The NUT issued the directive in protest and demand for the immediate release or rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area by terrorists.
The NUT, in a statement, by the Oyo State Chairman, Hassan Fatai; and the State Secretary, Salami Olukayode, indicated that the directive was necessitated by the continued captivity of abducted teachers and pupils in the state.
The NUT remarked that uncertainty still surrounded the rescue and safe release of the abducted victims. The Union insisted that the prolonged detention of the teachers and pupils had created fear and anxiety among its members, as well as discouraging parents from sending their children to school.
