Oyo Abduction: FCT Teachers Join Protest

Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, under umbrella of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, on Tuesday, joined the nationwide solidarity protest of bandits invasion of schools in Oyo State, kidnapping school pupils, students, and teachers, and the killing of a teacher in the forest.

The Teacher, led by the NUT, converged at the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, with placards of various inscriptions, calling for the unconditional release of the victims as well as the need to make schools across the country conducive for academic activities.

The action paralyzed activities in most parts of the Central Business District, as protesters move round major streets to register their displeasure against the ugly trend.

Leading the protest in Abuja, the FCT NUT Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Muhammad Shafa, said the demonstration followed a directive from the national leadership of the union in response to the increasing insecurity affecting teachers and students across the country.

Shafa described the killing of the teacher in Oyo State as tragic and disturbing, noting that educators, who dedicate their lives to imparting knowledge should not be subjected to violence and insecurity.

He warned that persistent attacks on teachers could discourage educators from serving in rural and hard-to-reach communities, thereby, affecting access to quality education for children.

The union called on the Federal Government and relevant authorities to strengthen security around schools, protect teachers and students, and improve school infrastructure, including the construction of perimeter fences to enhance safety.

The protest, which was peaceful, was held simultaneously across states of the federation, as teachers demanded urgent action to address insecurity in schools and protect education workers nationwide.
