Senate Seeks Establishment of North West Development Commission
A bill that seeks to establish the North West Development Commission (NWDC) has scaled second reading at the Nigerian Senate.
The bill, sponsored by Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin is one of the three bills read for the second time at Thursday’s plenary of the Senate presided over by President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.
The bill was introduced to the nine Senate in 2019 but was not assented to.
Galaxy tv reports that With the re-introduction of the North West Development Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2024, it appears every region wants a commission.
Leading the debate, Senator Jibrin noted that the commission seeks to act as a catalyst to develop the arrays of potentials of the North West as well as address the gap in infrastructural development of the region.
Some lawmakers that supported the bill include Godswill Akpabio, Adamu Aliero and Abba Moro.
After the deliberations, the bill was read the second time after a voice vote, the President of the Senate referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Establishment.
Already in existence are the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the North East Development Commission (NEDC).
