Reps Call For National Response To Threat Of Flood In Nigeria

Chairman of the House Committee on Hydrological Services and HYPPADEC, Hon. Paschal Agbodike, has called for a coordinated national response to the growing threat of floods in Nigeria, with urgent attention to vulnerable communities near Mokwa, Kainji, and Jebba dams in Niger State, as well as Ihiala and Ogbaru in Anambra.
Speaking in Abuja during an interactive session with relevant agencies, Hon. Agbodike described the flood crisis as worsened by climate change, rapid urbanization, and deteriorating infrastructure.
He outlined four key areas for action: community awareness, improved forecasting, infrastructure maintenance, and climate change adaptation.
The Committee also summoned the Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) and the Minister of Transportation over their alleged role in the Mokwa flood, which claimed lives and destroyed property.
Agbodike warned that the government would no longer tolerate flood-related deaths and vowed accountability for any responsible agency.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director of NIRSAL, Mr. Aliyu Abdulhameed, and Chairman of Mokwa LGA, Hon. Jibril Abdullahi Muregi, blamed poor railway infrastructure, among other factors, for the Mokwa disaster and called for urgent intervention.
