Reps Calls For Reform In Security Architecture
The House of Representatives has called for urgent reforms in Nigeria’s security architecture, following rising cases of school kidnappings and attacks in parts of the country, including Oyo and Borno States.
The resolution followed debates on motions of urgent public importance after lawmakers resumed from a four-week recess.
Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala sponsored a motion on the kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State and the killing of mathematics teacher, Michael Oyedokun, by his abductors.
He noted that the killing of Oyedokun, while in captivity, exposed the growing threat from criminal groups operating within the Old Oyo National Park and surrounding forests, describing the area as a major corridor for criminal activities, exposing South-West communities to risk.
While acknowledging ongoing rescue efforts and the approval of 1,000 forest guards, the House said stronger action is needed to secure victims and prevent further attacks.
In a related development, lawmakers also considered the abduction of 42 school children in Mussa, Borno State, urging security agencies to intensify rescue operations and strengthen school protection nationwide.
Meanwhile, lawmakers urged increased funding for the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), warning that the Ebola outbreak in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo poses a regional threat due to porous borders.
In another development, 13 members of the House defected to other political parties.
The Speaker also read a letter from former Minority Leader, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, confirming his resignation from the position, though his next political move was not disclosed.
