Fire Engulfs Popular Market In Delta
An Overnight fire, which is believed to have started around 11pm in the night has destroyed over a thousand shops at the popular Pessu market in Warri South local government area of Delta state.
The market, which is known for the selling of building materials sea foods because of the proximity to the Delta waterways, has been in existence for over sixty years. Shop owners were seen gathered at
the scene to pick up remains of their burnt properties.
Hundreds of affected shop owners began to troop into their shops as early as 6am when the news filtered into town, that the market which had before now been burnt three times has been destroyed by an overnight fire.
Speaking on the fire outbreak, some of the affected shop owners who spoke with Galaxy news lamented that they lost properties worth millions of naira, and call for government support.
Meanwhile, burnt zincs and properties littered the expansive market space which covers hundreds of hectares of land, while sympathizers and shop owners gathered in groups to discuss the fire outbreak.
Also speaking on the disaster, the market leader narrated how she got the news, and call on the Delta state government to come to their aid after several promises by the commissioner.
In the meantime, the Delta state commissioner for special duties Mr. Tony Nwaka has promised to visit the market tomorrow morning to ascertain the extent of damage by the fire outbreak.
