The National Council of State has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to perform its civic duty by going ahead with the 2015 elections as scheduled.

This lays to rest fears raised in various quarters that the elections be postponed.

Briefing journalists after the council’s meeting, in Abuja, governors of Ondo and Imo states said the council after considering briefs of security agencies asked INEC to consider the positions and brief the nation on the next step to take.

The meeting which lasted for several hours according to the governors deliberated upon the possibility of conducting the 2015 general election next week.

Security agencies and the chairman of the independent national electoral commission had briefed the council on fears and preparedness for the election leading to council’s decision to ask INEC to ponder on the issues raised and take a decision.

There has been a speculation over the preparedness of the electoral empire but the governors disclosed that INEC assured the council of its readiness towards the election.

Imo state governor Rochas Okorocha  said no decision as to change of dates or postponement of the election was contemplated as the INEC chairman Professor Attahiru Jega he said reassured them that the commission is more prepared for the election than it was in 2011. He said INEC will brief Nigerians on its plans soon

All former presidents and heads of state of Nigeria and governors of the thirty six states of the federation attended the special meeting except former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

The presidential and national assembly elections are scheduled for February 14 while governorship and house of assembly will hold on February 28.
