FG set-up panel against armed forces
The panel of Inquiry set-up by the Federal Government to investigate allegations of human rights violations by the Nigeria Armed forces has commenced sitting at the State High Court in Port Harcourt the Rivers State capital.
During the public hearing, the panel disclosed the aims and objectives of the Federal Government to investigate challenges inherent in the fight against insurgency, militancy and other local conflicts in Nigeria that have led to years of allegations of non-compliance with human rights obligations in the rules of engagement of the Armed forces.
 
The panel Chairman, Justice Biobele Georgewill said the essence of the panel is to review extant laws on rules of engagement guiding the operations of the armed forces of Nigeria and the extent of compliance.
 
Speaking during the sitting of the panel, the General Officer Commanding the 6th Division of Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Major-General Udoh described the steps taking by the Federal Government as a good one and said it is a welcome development by the military.
 
Recall that, the panel was set up on 11th of August, 2017, with hearings set to hold in six geopolitical zones of the Nigeria.
