Court Delays El-Rufai Trial to July 15 Over Fresh Application
The trial of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State could not proceed as scheduled after arguments in court. The matter had been fixed for accelerated hearing. However, proceedings were stalled when the defendant was absent, prompting exchanges between the prosecution and defence counsels.
The prosecution informed the High Court that El-Rufai declined to accompany the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, to court. His reason, according to the prosecution, was the need to seek medical attention. The prosecution argued that the action was contrary to the provisions of the Kaduna State Administration of Criminal Justice Law.
Adding to the delay, the defence also filed a fresh application before Justice Darius Khobo In the application, El-Rufai asked the judge to recuse himself from the case, citing a lack of confidence that he would get justice under Justice Khobo.
Following the arguments and the new application, the court decided to adjourn further proceedings. Justice Khobo fixed 15th July for the hearing and determination of the transfer application filed by the defendant.
El-Rufai is currently facing a nine-count charge bordering on alleged abuse of office and money laundering. The case, brought by the ICPC, will remain on hold until the court rules on whether it should be transferred to another judge and court.
