Tinubu Falls Apart With Egbetokun, Brings Disu On Board

There is a paradox of covert disaffection upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had fallen apart with the former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, culminating in the abrupt exit from office on Tuesday. The President brought Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG, Olatunji Disu, on board as successor to Egbetokun.

President Tinubu precipitated wide controversy when he requested the National Assembly to amend the Police Act so as to extend the appointment tenure of IGP Egbetokun, whose retirement was due in the police service. The specific amendment was unprecedented.

Ironically, about two years after, Egbetokun resigned without completing the tenure for which the Police Act was amended. Just like Chinua Achebe, "Things Fall Apart" [the centre no longer holds.]

A statement by the State House, Abuja, indicated that President Tinubu accepted the resignation of Egbetokun, upon the submission of his letter, citing pressing family considerations.

Appointed in June 2023, Egbetokun was serving a four-year term scheduled to conclude in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.

The President approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as Acting Inspector-General of Police, with immediate effect.

Meanwhile, there is a report that the son of the former IGP, Victor Egbetokun, received ₦100 million from the Anambra Security Fund. The report generated a seeming scandal.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, Benjamin Hundeyin, acknowledged that Victor Egbetokun received the N100 million by accident.

Hundeyin said Victor raised alarm over the transaction, ordered that the fund be reverted to the source, then, closed the account.
