Statement by Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, FCA

Chairman, Nigerian Southern Senators’ Forum on the demise of His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that I, on behalf of the Nigerian Southern Senators’ Forum, join millions of Nigerians and friends of our dear nation around the world in mourning the passing of His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who departed this world a few hours ago in London.
President Buhari was not only a towering figure in Nigerian politics but also a symbol of integrity, discipline, and unwavering patriotism. Throughout his life, he embodied the values of simplicity, selflessness, and resolute commitment to the Nigerian project. From his early days as a military officer to his service as Head of State and later as a democratically elected President, he dedicated his entire life to the service of our great nation.
His personality was defined by an uncommon humility and an unyielding sense of duty. Despite the immense power and influence he wielded, he remained approachable and steadfast in his quest to build a more transparent and accountable government. President Buhari’s aversion to ostentation and his frugal lifestyle inspired many to embrace the virtues of honesty and modesty in public life.
President Buhari’s achievements during his tenure as President were far-reaching. He spearheaded a vigorous anti-corruption campaign that reshaped the national conversation on integrity and governance. His administration prioritized the fight against insecurity, strengthened Nigeria’s infrastructure base, advanced agricultural self-sufficiency, and laid the groundwork for economic diversification. His efforts to reposition Nigeria on the global stage as a respected voice for Africa and a key player in international affairs will remain a significant part of his legacy.
Beyond politics, President Buhari will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a true statesman who stood firm in his convictions, even in the face of daunting challenges. His life was a testament to discipline, perseverance, and love for country.
