Reps Attend Closed Session Resolves To Progress on the Tax Reform Bills
The House of Representatives held a closed-door session to deliberate on the four Tax Reform Bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu. On September 3, 2024, the President submitted four tax reform bills to the National Assembly, based on recommendations from the Taiwo Oyedele-led Tax Reforms Committee.
The bills include Nigeria Tax Bill 2024 – Establishing a fiscal framework for taxation in the country, Tax Administration Bill – Providing a clear legal framework for all taxes and reducing disputes, Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill – Repealing the Federal Inland Revenue Service Act to establish the Nigeria Revenue Service and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill – Creating a tax tribunal and a tax ombudsman.
After the session, Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who presided over plenary announced that discussions on the bills would continue until Tuesday next week. He stated that the House plans to hold a special session next week to invite resource persons for further engagement. The goal, he explained, is to ensure the tax reform bills are thoroughly reviewed and well-documented before a decision is made.
