Oyo Assembly passes anti-grazing bill

Oyo state house of assembly has passed the anti-open grazing bill into law.


The speaker of the house, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin and other lawmakers who spoke at the plenary declared that the bill will ensure peace and promote agricultural businesses in the state.

The lawmakers had before the passage of the bill held a stakeholders' meeting with various farmers and herdsmen groups including security operatives in attendance.

Although dome herders in attendance expressed reservation for some aspects of the bill during which the lawmakers promised to look into the matter.

Speaking after the passage, the speaker of the house, Hon. Debo Ogundoyin says the bill was passed to avoid continuous damages, loss of lives and quantifiable investment to constant clashes between herders and pastoral framers.

He appealed to residents to ignore falsehood and misconceptions on the prohibition of open rearing and grazing of livestock in the state.

Reacting to the passage of the bill, the chairman, Gan Allah Fulani Development Association of Nigeria, Oyo state chapter, Alhaji Sale Bayari says the body commended the initiative of the lawmakers but stated that the rights of all citizens must be guaranteed.
