Mass Metering: Senate Faults NERC over Slow Pace of Metering
The Nigerian Senate has expressed concern about the poor performance of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission ( NERC), on Mass Metering Project in the country despite a N33.4 billion disbursement by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Senate Committee gave this assessment Thursday evening at an interactive session with NERC officials and representatives of the various Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs).
The project which targets the installation of one million meters for houses across the country between October 2020 and April 2021 has only recorded 13% implementation as at 19th of March 2021.
The regulatory agency attributed the slow pace of the project to a delay in the disbursement of funds by the CBN.
The Committee, therefore, stressed that the slow pace of the mass metering project has defeated the aim of the Federal government intervention by way of a loan to the DISCOs to the tune of N59.2 billion.
