Delta community calls for intervention
As part of activities to mark this year’s World Earth Day celebration, the Centre for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ) have sensitized the people of Ogulagha community in Burutu local government area of Delta state on the need to protect the Earth.
The group stormed the oil rich community with the major oil deposits in the Niger Delta displaying placards of different inscriptions.
Despite the presence of oil installations belonging to the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), Ogulagha community is still one of the most underdeveloped in the region.
Speaking on the issue, the National Coordinator of the group, called for urgent government intervention.
He called on the federal government to compel oil companies to stop gas flaring as the community leaders also expressed their major challenges.
With the awareness and sensitization by the community people which played host to the SPDC, one would expect it to send the right signal to oil multinationals and the federal government.
