Benue govt moves to curb flooding

Benue State Government said it is employing all measures necessary to address and find a lasting solution to the perennial flooding in parts of the state.


 

The State Commissioner for Water Resources, Dondo Ahile and his counterpart from Works and Transport, Engineer Alex Shapes, reacted to the flood situation in the last couple of days in Makurdi and its environs.

They said flooding is going to worsen with changes in climatic condition and human activities, but disclosed that the situation is far less compared to previous years due to its sensitization.

Both noted that the longtime solution is addressing the issues of River Basins, which involves dredging river Benue; opening drainage channels effectively and how water management.

With several communities already affected and properties lost to flooding in recent weeks, Benue state government says adequate place has been provided for those displaced but said talks are ongoing with both federal government and development partner to find a solution to avert future occurrence.
