Walz speaks to union workers in first solo campaign event

Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) is scheduled to speak to California union workers at 3:45 p.m. EDT at his first solo campaign event since Vice President Kamala Harris tapped him to be her running mate.

Walz is scheduled to address the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees convention in Los Angeles. The AFSCME boasts 1.6 million members and swiftly endorsed Harris as a "dynamic leader who has been a pro-worker champion" the day after President Joe Biden made his historic campaign exit.

Union support is a powerful component of the Democratic coalition that former President Donald Trump has vied to break apart. Earlier this year, he met with the head of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which has 1.3 million members. Teamsters President Sean O'Brien later spoke at the Republican National Convention but withheld the coveted endorsement.

The Democratic coalition is far from breaking apart, however. The leaders of AFL-CIO, which counts UNITE HERE as a member, and the United Auto Workers, among others, have rushed to Harris's side.
