The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday expressed worries over the proliferation of a wide range of beauty products and cosmetics that are harmful to the skin and therefore call for the effective regulation of these businesses and their products.

This is a sequel to a motion by Lagos Central Senator, Oluremi Tinubu who noted that these range of cosmetics fall short of meeting the required safety and health standards, and therefore call for regulatory agencies such as NAFDAC to be alive to their duties.

Similarly, other Senators say the market for cosmetic is a huge one, with women appearing to be the primary target, noting also that some of these products are used for babies and children.

The Senate mandated its Committee on health to investigate the procedures in place for certification while directing the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control to maintain a database for these products.

The Senate also called on NAFDAC and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Council to collaborate towards ensuring the tracking of consumer injuries.
