Tension In Abuja, Senate Asks Makinde To Withdraw Call For UN Probe Of Oriire Kidnap
The demand by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for international investigation into the Oriire LGA kidnapping of school children and teachers may be generating apprehension in Abuja.
Accordingly, the Senate appealed to the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, to withdraw his request for a United Nations investigation into the abduction and subsequent rescue of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
The resolution followed an additional prayer moved by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Edo North, at plenary while lawmakers considered a motion commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Armed Forces, and other security agencies for securing the release of the victims after 56 days in captivity.
Oshiomhole described Governor Makinde's demand for an international probe as "politics taken too far" and urged him not to trivialize a successful security operation.
The substantive motion was sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Ekiti Central, and co-sponsored by 108 senators, while Senator Aniekan Bassey, Akwa Ibom North-East, seconded the motion.
During the debate, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, Oyo North, whose district extends to the area where the pupils were abducted, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and the military for securing the children's release.
Lawmakers also called on the military to intensify efforts to rescue other victims still being held by kidnappers across the country.
Presiding over the session, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin put Senator Oshiomhole's additional prayer to a voice vote. Although the initial vote was inconclusive, a second vote produced a majority in favour of the motion.
The Senate, thereafter, adopted the resolution, urging Governor Makinde to withdraw his call for a United Nations investigation, while unanimously commending President Tinubu, the Armed Forces and other security agencies for the successful rescue operation.
