Senate on Tuesday adjourned plenary after reading letters from the President and the Acting President on the appointment of Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen as Chief Justice of Nigeria and nomination of Adeyinka Asekun as non-career Ambassador.

The Senate after observing a minute silent for the demise of a member of the House of Representatives, Sani Bello Mashi representing Dutsi/Mashi federal constituency of Katsina state, adjourned plenary to Wednesday February 22.

 At the resumed plenary, the Senate President Bukola Saraki read letters from President Muhammadu Buhari on his request for extension of his annual leave due to routine medical check-ups.

Two letters from the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osibajo on the nomination of non-career Ambassador from Ogun state, Adeyinka Asekun and the appointment of Walter Nkanu Onnoghen as Chief Justice of Nigeria were read on the floor of the senate by the Senate President.

The Senate President equally read a letter from Senator Andy Ubah, formally indicating his intention to defect from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Senator Andy Ubah's defection did not go down well with PDP senate members as presented by Senate minority Leader, Goodswill Akpabio, Senator Gorge Sekibo and Ben Murry Bruce in their separate interviews after  plenary.

A minute silence was observed by Senators for Hon. Sani Bello Mashi, representing Dutsi/Mashi federal constituency of Katsina state.

Before the Lawmakers went into an executive session, the leadership of the Senate held meetings with chairmen of the Senate standing committees for feedback from the 3-week budget defence.
