Kaduna High Court Denies El-Rufai’s Medical Bail Request
The Kaduna State High Court, on Monday, dismissed former Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s application for bail on health grounds. Justice Darius Khobo ruled against the request, which sought to release El-Rufai, temporarily, to obtain medical treatment for, what his legal team described as, deteriorating health. The decision means El-Rufai will remain in custody as the case proceeds.
While refusing bail, the court issued a directive to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC. Justice Khobo ordered the anti-graft agency to grant El-Rufai access to medical services within Nigeria, but only under strict security supervision. The judge balanced the state’s interest in custody with concerns for the defendant’s health, opting not to release him outright.
El-Rufai is facing charges of alleged abuse of office and money laundering brought by the ICPC. The charges relate to his tenure as Kaduna State governor from 2015 to 2023. Both the allegations and El-Rufai’s profile have kept the proceedings under intense public scrutiny.
Justice Khobo adjourned the case to June 29, 2026, for continuation of hearing. The court further scheduled July 6, 7, and 8 for the substantive hearing of the case.
The Federal High Court is also expected to rule next week on a related bail application before the state court resumes.
With both courts set to take action soon, the case is likely to remain in focus nationwide. The outcome could set a precedent for how high-profile former officials are treated on issues of bail and medical care while facing corruption charges
