INEC Chairman Speaks On Amended Electoral Act 2026
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan, has revealed that the amended Electoral Act 2026 is designed to correct past shortcomings and rebuild public trust ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at a Citizens’ Town Hall Meeting, Amupitan said the Act, developed in partnership with the National Assembly and civil society groups, targeted persistent challenges in election logistics and the transmission of presidential results.
He stressed that future elections must run strictly on schedule, backed by tested and reliable technology.
The INEC Chairman assured Nigerians there would be no technical glitches in 2027, pledging that the polls would be the best in the country’s history and a milestone toward national development.
The Executive Director of YIAGA AFRICA, Samson Itodo, described the Act as the cornerstone of credible 2027 elections.
He urged citizens to scrutinize the legislation, demand transparency, and hold election managers accountable.
Both INEC and civil society groups pledged sustained collaboration to close loopholes and strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process.
