There are fears among the political class and the electorate in Nigeria ahead of the next month general elections following the inability of most Nigeria to collect the Permanent Voters Card, which is crucial equipment for the poll.

Although, ‎the umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission had, on several occasion assured the electorates that not a single person eligible to vote will be disenfranchise, yet Nigerians who had registered are yet to collect their cards.

When the Independent National Electoral Commission came up with the idea of Permanent Voters card, which is totally new in the history of democratic governance in Nigeria, many Nigerians applauded the initiative ‎and described it as a right step in the right direction.

The reality began to dawn on the people, when the registration exercise for the permanent cards commenced as electorates that are up to voting age and those above found it difficult to get them registered for the cards.

There were series of condemnation and criticism against the shoddy and uncoordinated ‎preparation for the exercise by Nigerians. The situation become more terrible when the cards finally came out.

Many who registered as their respective Wards found their names on the list pasted for those whose cards had been produced but we're disappointed when they could not locate their cards.

This development attracted and is still attracting series of condemnation, a situation that necessitated the on going continuous voters registration across the land.

As a way out this development, stakeholders and political leaders in the country have commenced series of advocacy for Nigerians, especially the electorates not to be disappointed with the failure on the part of the Independent National Electoral Commission on the issue of Permanent Voters Card.

Not only this, some who have registered but could not locate their cards ‎have continue to challenged the electoral body saying,  it is a deliberate effort by the umpire to disenfranchise some people from participating in the poll.

Also, some of the electorates who are yet to collect their permanent Voters Card decried the inadequacies in the level of enlightenment and advocacy for the continuous voters registration and collection of the Permanent Voters Card at the various designated centres.

They appealed to the electoral body to step up the necessary procedures which will facilitate the timely distribution of the cards.

As a way out of the logjam, some Nigerians therefore canvassed that for those who have registered and have collected their Temporary Voters Card, the independent National Electoral Commission should allow such category of people to use their Temporary voters card for the next month election in order not to be disenfranchised.

However, the Independent National Electoral Commission had insisted that Temporary Voters Card would not be allowed for the poll as Card readers would be used.

As an assurance to various appealed from all Nigerians and other stakeholders, the electoral Commission has continue to assured Nigerians, who had registered and their names had been pasted by the election umpire, that‎ they will have their cards before the elelction.

It is hope that the Independent National Electoral Commission will put its house in order‎ and ensure even distribution of the Permanent Voters Card to those that had registered with the commission.
