Senate mandates police, FRSC to investigate Onitsha fire

The Nigerian Senate has urged the Police and the Federal Road Safety Corps to investigate the circumstances leading to the accident that caused the Onitsha fuel tanker fire, with a view to prosecuting anyone found culpable.

Galaxy’s Godfrey Eshiemoghie reports that this is one of the resolutions reached at plenary Thursday following a motion which was considered on the floor of the Senate.

The sponsor of the motion, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, in the lead debate, described as saddening the petrol tanker inferno at Upper Iweka, Onitsha, Anambra state of Wednesday 16th October, which left destruction in its trail.

In their separate contributions, a cross-section of the senators called for urgent action to address the recurring incidence of fire outbreaks in Onitsha and other parts of the country, to forestall destruction to lives and property.

The Senate also resolved to accelerate the passage of the Petroleum Tankers Safety Bill.
