Reps Reaffirm Commitment to Enhance NIMET Operations

The House Committee on Aviation Technology has reaffirmed commitment to enhance the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) for improved national safety and service delivery. Speaking at a public hearing on a bill to amend the NIMET Establishment Act, the Committee Chairman, Hon Tajudeen  Abisodun said the changes particularly to Section 13(2) aim to improve the agency’s efficiency and ensure accurate weather forecasts, especially for the aviation sector.

House Speaker, Hon Abbas Tajudeen, represented by Deputy Chief Whip Hon Ibrahim Isiaka, said the hearing reflects the House’s dedication to accountability and citizen-centered legislation.

NIMET DG, Prof. Charles Anosike, backed the amendment, calling for a cost recovery framework to ensure sustainable meteorological services across sectors like marine, construction, and telecom. He noted current gaps in the law prevent effective cost recovery from non-aviation users, impacting infrastructure and service coverage.
