Reps Facilitates Nigeria's Transition To Low Carbon Economy
The House of Representatives Chairman on the Mandatory National Decarbonization Programme, Sesi Whingan, on Friday, said the National Assembly is working to establish a legislative framework that will facilitate Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
At the National Decarbonisation Technical Roundtable in Abuja, Whingan said the event is part of a nationwide engagement to bring together policy makers, regulators, industry leaders, development partners, and civil society to agree on implementing a mandatory decarbonisation programme.
He emphasized that the initiative is designed to strengthen investor confidence in Nigeria’s growing carbon market and attract both local and international investments in renewable energy, forestry, and climate-smart agriculture projects.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, represented by Muktar Shagaya, warned that Nigeria cannot ignore climate change as its impacts are already being felt across the country through drought, flooding, erosion, and rising temperatures.
Also, Wangari Muchiri, Director for Africa at the Global Wind Energy Council, said Nigeria’s commitment to decarbonisation presents opportunities for economic diversification, job creation and increased investment in clean energy.
Technical Consultant to the National Decarbonisation Programme, Irede Ajala, stated that the proposed Decarbonisation Bill has already passed second reading in the House of Representatives, as efforts continue to strengthen Nigeria’s carbon market and green economy.
