One Person Electrocuted as Petrol Tanker Explodes in Ibadan

A tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) on Sunday night fell and caught fire along the UI-Ojoo axis of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital city.

According to sources, the tanker caught fire the moment it fell off the road with the petrol content spreading to houses around the area.

The cause of the incident which occurred very close to Orogun Junction around 11 pm, was as a result of the tanker that rammed into the electric pole and led to the explosion.

Sources at the scene of the incident claimed that men of the Oyo state fire service arrived late at the scene of the incident.

The Director of Fire Service, in the state, Moshood Adewuyi said men of the Service have been contacted and that the men are already on their way to the location.

He claimed that efforts of men of the Oyo State Fire Service to battle a raging inferno caused by a petrol tanker at Orogun-Agbowo met setback early Monday morning as some electrical cables not far from the scene of the incident fell off.

According to him, the cables which were said to have live electricity as at the time of the incident were seen falling off and making some sparks as they fell into the raging inferno.

One person whose identity is yet to be ascertained was said to have been electrocuted while trying to use his phone within the vicinity of the incident.

The man was said to have been rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. It was not clear if he was dead or not as at the time of filing this report.

Efforts to reach officials of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company at the middle of the night were futile.

The intervention of the Commandant of Amotekun Corps, Col Olayinka Olayanju (rtd) however helped to save the day as he was said to have sent his men to the IBEDC office at Sasa requesting them to switch off power on the line.

However, despite assurance by the IBEDC officials on the ground that the power had been put out, it was gathered that the men insisted that the official accompany them to the scene to test if indeed the electrical power had been put off the high tension cables.
