IGP Says Nigeria's Security Environment More Complex

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, says Nigeria’s security environment is becoming more complex, requiring strategic thinking, adaptability and intelligence-led policing. He spoke in Abuja on Tuesday at the decoration of one Deputy Inspector-General of Police, 7 Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and 13 Commissioners of Police.

Egbetokun said promotion in the Nigeria Police Force is based on service record, leadership capacity and readiness for higher responsibility, noting that elevation to senior rank reflects institutional confidence and trust. He charged the newly promoted officers to translate their ranks into effective leadership, stressing that senior command comes with greater operational, administrative and ethical accountability.

The Inspector-General also emphasized the need for integrity, discipline and respect for human dignity, warning that misconduct at senior level undermines public trust. He also reaffirmed the commitment of the Police Force to merit-based promotion, commended the Police Service Commission for a transparent process, and acknowledged the support of officers’ families.
