IGP, CG Correctional Service promise collaboration on Criminal Justice Syste

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has acknowledged the vital role of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) in criminal justice administration, particularly in corrections, rehabilitation, and reintegration. He made the declaration while receiving the Acting Comptroller General of NCS, SylvestGalaxy Television reports that Egbetokun emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Nigerian Police and the Correctional Service in maintaining law and order, upholding justice, and promoting community safety.

Earlier in his remarks, the Acting Comptroller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Sylvester Ndidi, raised concerns over congestion in custodial facilities, attributing it to the refusal of Governors to commute death sentences to life imprisonment. He explained that transferring such inmates to less congested facilities would help manage overcrowding, which is primarily an urban issue saying, these inmates often cause disruptions, as they have little regard for prison regulations.
He revealed that as of February 10th, Nigeria’s custodial facilities house over 80,000 inmates, operating at nearly 100% capacity noting that, more than 56,000 of these are awaiting trial, making up about 67-68% of the total population. Ndidi said the remaining 20,000+ are convicted inmates, including 3,666 on death row.
