Federal high court grapple with high volume of pending cases

Judges of the Federal High Court had their hands full last legal year owing to a high turnover of cases during the period.

Galaxy’s Godfrey Eshiemoghie reports that this aspect of the country’s justice system came to light Monday on the occasion of the Special Court Session to mark the commencement of the Federal High Court Legal Year 2019/2020, the event which also doubles as the Judges Conference.

In his speech highlighting the status of litigation before the court, the Acting Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, noted the urgent need for the recruitment of more judicial officers owing to the massive number of pending court cases, 116,000 in total.

Justice Tsoho assured of improving on the achievements of his predecessors by way of paying attention to the efficient and effective administration of justice and the welfare of judicial officers.

On his part, the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami commended the Federal High Court for the prompt handling of pre-election matters.

Malami called for mutual collaboration from stakeholders in the justice system to ensure the effective performance of the Federal High Court this new legal year. The Justice Minister described as innovative the release of the amended Federal High Court [Civil Procedure] Rules 2019 which came into force on the 10th day of May 2019.
