#EndBadGovernment: AGF takes over the case as police justify arraignment of protesters.
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) has directed the Nigeria Police to transfer the casefile of endbad governance violent protest suspects to his office and hand over same to the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF) today, Saturday 2nd November, 2024.
Recall that the arraignment of some minors among the #EndBadGovernment protesters yesterday at a Federal High Court in Abuja, has sparked off criticism and outrage.
The directive by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) was contained in a press statement signed by the Attorney General of itself and made available to Our Correspondent.
According to Prince Fagbemi (SAN), further directed the DPPF to immediately put machinery in motion for consideration of the court to bring the adjournment date forward (an earlier date).
He disclosed that it has come to his notice that the court has remanded the defendants in detention centres and adjourned the case to January, but It is not within his power to vary the order of the court remanding the defendants in detention centres and adjourning the case to January.
Fagbemi revealed that there are some issues his office need to look into regarding the matter for an informed decision to be taken.
In another development, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has responded to a recent incident in court where six out of 76 suspects reportedly fainted, a move suspected to be staged to draw negative media attention.
The Force in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident that happened in the court said medical assistance was immediately provided, reflecting the Police's commitment to the welfare of those in custody, regardless of the charges they face.
ACP Adejobi stated that the suspects were presented in court, formally charged, and subsequently issued a remand order adding that, throughout this process, the police has strived to ensure that justice is balanced with compassion, respecting each suspect's rights and ensuring access to medical care and other basic needs.
The Police reiterated its dedication to upholding justice while remaining sensitive to the rights of all individuals, including young persons.
He said Under Nigerian law, those who have reached the age of criminal responsibility must be accountable for their actions, a standard in line with global practices where age does not exempt individuals from legal consequences in cases of serious offenses.
