Customs Intercepts Bullion Van With Smuggled Rice, N24m In Ogun
A bullion van intercepted twenty two months ago carrying foreign parboiled rice, including the sum of over 24 million naira has finally been handed over to their owners by officials of the Nigeria customs service.
Area Comptroller Ogun 2 Command, Comptroller Bisi Alade said the action of the service followed final investigation which revealed that the bullion van in question was not being used for illegal border activities at the time of interception in 2023 .
The bullion van carrying over 24 million naira was impounded 22 months ago by officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service at the Olorunda axis of Ogun State for carrying 12 bags of foreign parboiled rice.
The Customs service says it relied on section 168 of Nigeria Customs Service, Act , 2023 which empowers the Comptroller General of Customs to release seized items on compassionate ground if it is established that the purpose was not intended to convey contraband goods.
The Customs area Controller Ogun II also noted that a total revenue of Over 21 billion naira was generated in the year 2023 by the Command.
Meanwhile a total number of 18 officers of the command have been promoted and decorated with their new ranks by comptroller bisi alade, who urged the newly promoted officers to be professional in the discharge of their duties.
