Catholic Bishop Conference Encourages Nigerians On Civic Responsibilities
The President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, Most Rev. Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, in the euphoria of Easter, emphasized the importance of civic responsibility. He encouraged Nigerians to prepare for the 2027 general elections and participate in the democratic process. He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure free, fair, and credible elections, and appealed to eligible voters to obtain and verify their voter cards.
Most Rev. Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso called on Nigerians to embrace hope, deepen their faith, and participate in building a just society as Christians celebrate Easter. He reflected on the Lenten season, describing it as a period of self-examination and spiritual renewal that culminates in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Ndagoso expressed hope that the stone of suffering weighing on Nigerians would be rolled away, citing insecurity, economic struggles, and poor leadership as major challenges facing the nation. He attributed these issues to years of selfishness, greed, and disregard for the common good, but emphasized that Christ's death and resurrection offer consolation and hope.
The Archbishop stressed that God identifies with the poor and marginalized, and urged Nigerians not to lose hope despite ongoing challenges. He encouraged victims of violence and hardship to see their suffering as a pathway to experiencing the power of the Resurrection, and called on Christians to encounter the risen Christ through acts of love and service.
The Archbishop concluded by reminding citizens of the eternal significance of their earthly lives, urging them to make choices that promote justice, love, and the common good. He encouraged Christians to express their faith through practical compassion and community solidarity.
