History will be made when Mexico and Nigeria set the stage at the Georgia Dome.

Sales of ticket for the game surpassed 54,000 by Friday morning, guaranteeing the match will set a record for the largest soccer crowd in the history of Atlanta. The previous record of 54,229 tickets sold was set during last year’s Gold Cup, which also featured Mexico at the Dome.

“We’re urging people to come out and be a part of Atlanta soccer history,” said Gabriel Gabor, with Soccer United Marketing, which is organizing the game.

 “Everyone that comes to this game will be part of Atlanta soccer history.”

Capacity for the event is 72,000, which includes suites. Capacity for seating in the bowls is slightly more than 68,000.

Grass will be installed on top of the artificial turf for the game. That process will begin Sunday, wednesday’s game features two teams that will appear in the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

Mexico, No. 21 in FIFA’s world rankings, is in a World Cup group that includes Brazil, Croatia and Cameroon.

Nigeria, No. 47 in FIFA’s rankings, is in a group that includes Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Iran.
