Makinde Calls On UN To Probe Kidnap Of Orire School Pupils, Teachers

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has called for an independent investigation into the abduction of pupils and teachers from Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area, urging relevant international human rights and accountability bodies, including those within the United Nations system, to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and its resolution.

Governor Makinde, in a state broadcast on the safe return of the victims, said the call was aimed at establishing the truth, ensuring accountability and restoring public confidence in the nation's security institutions.

He stressed that the exercise was not intended to undermine any institution but to ensure that those responsible for the tragedy are brought to justice.

Makinde, however, mourned those who lost their lives during the incident, including teachers - Mr. Joel Adesiyan, Deacon John Olaleye and Mr. Michael Oyedokun, as well as security personnel, hunters and Amotekun operatives, who died during the rescue operation. He prayed for the speedy recovery of Mr. Bamidele Paul, who sustained injuries.

Governor Makinde commended the people of Oyo State for their patience, resilience and cooperation throughout the rescue efforts, particularly, those affected by security measures and curfews. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies or through the state's toll-free emergency line, 615.

The governor announced that the state government would strengthen security around communities bordering the Old Oyo National Park by improving surveillance, regulating access routes, enhancing intelligence gathering and strengthening collaboration with local communities and security agencies.
