Stakeholders Protest Use Of Military During Elections

Almost six weeks to the conduct of the 2015 election, Nigerians have kicked against any attempt by the Government to deploy troops for the election saying such move ‎will be counter-productive.

A cross section of politicians including a Chieftain of the Unity Party of Nigeria‎, Rotimi Paseda, Prince Soye Oyenuga and Dapo Onasanya while speaking with press on the level of preparation for the next month election, said it will be in the interest of unity and progress of the country for the next month election to hold no matter the situation.

They cautioned the Federal Government against the deployment of troops for the election adding that, such step will be counterproductive and will prevent the poll from being free and fair as expected by Nigerians.

The speakers agreed that it is imperative for the government to deploy troops to the trouble sections in the country, especially in the Northeast region of the country where members of the Boko Haram sect are perpetrating their ‎evil act, in order to maintain law and order.

The politicians maintained that it will be wrong and out of place for the government to send troops to states where there is peace during the election except to promote personal agenda.

‎They appealed to the federal government to refrain from any act that could lead to the intimidation of the electorates before, during and after the 2015 election in the country saying, the will of the people must be allowed to prevail.

On the level of preparation for the poll, especially the lingering controversy on the Permanent Voters Card, ‎paseda and Oyenuga said the Independent National Electoral Commission, being chaired by Prof. Attairu Jega is competent to deliver as expected going by his pedigree in the past.

They expressed optimism about the capability of the election umpire to ensure peaceful ‎election come next month.
