The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has warned that anyone who attempts to disrupt the Saturday, August 15 governorship election in Osun State, through violence, will face decisive action.

IGP Disu, at a stakeholders’ engagement with civil society organisations on election security, said the police had put in place adequate security to protect voters, electoral officials and election materials, assuring residents of a professional, impartial and non-partisan conduct throughout the election.

He added that more than 3,000 polling units would be secured, with at least four officers deployed to each polling unit, while recent security measures include the replacement of the state Commissioner of Police to strengthen election security.

Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, described the Osun governorship election as a critical test for Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He said Yiaga Africa identified 13 local government areas as high-risk, with 34 deaths linked to political violence.

The police reiterated that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure a peaceful, credible and violence-free poll.
