No Disenfranchisement Of Eligible Voters-INEC
The independent National Electoral Commission has debunked insinuation that it will disenfranchise some eligible voters in the country ahead of the 2015 general election.
The chairman of the commission in Ogun state, Sam Olumekun, who stated this while speaking with Journalists on the commencement of the voters registration and the distribution of permanent voters card in the state, stated that the desired of the commission was to ensure that all eligible voters participate during the forthcoming election.
Addressing Journalists on the planned voters registration and distribution of voters card in Ogun state, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission in the state, Sam Olumekun said the commission has no intention to disenfranchise anyone ahead of the 2015 general election.
He added that part of the move was the exercise scheduled to commence on 7th November 2014 stressing that, as the commission was poised to ensure that all votes count in the coming election, politicians and other stakeholders should support and cooperate with the commission to ensure the success of the exercise.
The commission chairman in the state disclosed that over 1.4 million voters’ cards are ready for collection in all the 3210 polling units in the state, calling on all eligible voters to troop out for the exercise. He stated that anyone who registered twice would be prosecuted.
Olumekun however, warned that the commission would not allow the exercise to be hijacked by desperate politicians in the state noting that, all arrangement has been made to ensure security in all the polling units where the cards and registration would take place.
He stressed that the importance of the two exercises cannot be over-emphasized as people without the permanent voters cards would not be allowed to vote during the 2015 election. The commission boss in Ogun state also used the avenue to inform indigene's of the state that, the commission has not created any additional polling units in the state as being speculated in some quarters.
Olumekun further appealed to all stakeholders, politicians, civil society organizations, labour unions, traditional rulers and religious leaders to join the crusade for the enlightenment and mobilization of members of the public.
The collection of the permanent voters card will last for three days while the voters registration will be on for five days.
