Reps Set To Implement Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities Act

The House of Representatives has reaffirmed commitment to enforcing the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) Act, signed into law in 2018. Chairman of the House Committee on Disability, Hon. Bashiru Dawodu, represented by Hon. Fayinka Oluwatoyin, stated this in Abuja at the launch of the Global Disabilities Green Initiative (GDGI).

He noted that over 30 million Nigerians with disabilities still face discrimination and limited opportunities and emphasized the critical role of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in advocating for the law since the National Assembly’s moratorium on implementation expired in January 2024. He assured that monitoring and enforcement efforts are now underway.

Founder of GDGI, Angelina Ugben, highlighted the Initiative’s mission to empower PWDs, combining social inclusion with environmental action. She recounted milestones, including planting 50 symbolic trees, training 25 PWDs in solar PV installation, distributing 100 solar lamps to students, and advocating for inclusive climate policies at national and international forums.
