Police Disperse Protesters With Teargas At National Assembly
The Police, on Tuesday, detonated canisters of teargas to disperse protesters at the National Assembly, Abuja.
The police responded to attempts by the protesters to gain access into the National Assembly complex.
The protesters attempted to jump the fence after the arrival of their leaders, a 2023 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore; and former Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung.
Leaders and members of the civil society organisations had, on Tuesday, returned to the National Assembly, demanding that lawmakers make real-time electronic transmission of election results mandatory in the proposed Electoral Act, Amendment Bill, 2026.
The protesters maintained that mandatory electronic transmission would promote transparency, create a level playing field for political actors, and restore confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
They also vowed to sustain pressure on lawmakers at the National Assembly.
