NDC 3.0: FG Commences Validation of Updated Contribution

The Federal Government has commenced the validation of Nigeria’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0, reaffirming its leadership in the fight against climate change. Speaking at the validation workshop in Abuja, the Director General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Teni Majekodunmi, said the new NDC outlines Nigeria’s updated targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate impacts, in line with the Paris Agreement.
She noted that the document is the product of several months of technical analysis, sectorial consultations, and collaboration across government ministries, agencies, and stakeholders. The updated plan aligns with Nigeria’s Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) and the Energy Transition Plan (ETP). Majekodunmi stated that while the Federal Government is driving the process, broad participation from civil society, the private sector, development partners, youth, and academia is essential for successful implementation.
She identified three major areas of focus which includes climate finance, capacity building, and technology transfer, calling for increased domestic funding and support from international climate finance sources such as the Green Climate Fund and Adaptation Fund. Other speakers called for urgent action, noting that the climate crisis is intensifying and the time for talk is over. The final NDC 3.0, they said, must reflect Nigeria’s national priorities, available resources, and commitment to a just and inclusive energy transition.
