NCC Reaffirms Commitment To Creating Fear and Competitive Environment

The Nigeria Communications Commission has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to creating a telecom environment that is fair, competitive, inclusive, and consumer friendly.

This assurance follow the increasing number of internet subscriptions from 105m in August 2018 to 142m in January 2025.

Speaking at the Magaji Dan-Yamusa Permanent Orientation Camp of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Keffi, Nasarawa State, the Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau, NCC, Freda Bruce-Bennett admitted that this growth was fueled by the increasing popularity and usage of social media, other online content, and the wider availability of data networks.

She admitted that In a digital age where data fuels everything from communication to education, business to social interaction protecting consumers from exploitative practices and ensuring digital literacy not only important, but has become essential.

The Commission maintained that Consumer perception of rapid data depletion remains a major pain point and continues to affect Quality of Experience (QoE) as well as overall consumer satisfaction in the telecoms industry adding that these concerns were further underscored Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), an independent not-for profit organization, which recently conducted a consumer survey to highlight the scale of public concern over unexplained data depletion and billing transparency.

Ncc stated that while it has championed a study on this issue, it has also taken proactive steps by conducting consumer education and Sensitization, promotion of data usage transparency initiatives, enforcement of fair usage policies, and ongoing engagement with service providers to enhance the overall Quality of Experience in the industry.

It added that these efforts are directly tied to the broader goal of promoting effective Data management while it has become important that telecom subscribers are equipped with the knowledge of how to monitor, control, and optimize the usage of their mobile data bundle allowance, be it daily, weekly, or monthly plans.

The Commission therefore, enjoined the Corp members as educated, mobile, and socially connected Nigerians, to be key agents of change by Spreading awareness of consumer rights and protections to friends, family, and local communities.

Also, to educate others about the NCC’s initiatives and how and how to enjoy better quality of experience, report challenges, share feedback, and help the commission serve the people better.
