Group Accuses Kwakwaso of Interference in Investigation
The Kano People’s Rights Alliance (KPRA) has faulted the former Kano State Governor and Senator, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, over his alleged attempts to interfere with corruption investigations being conducted by the Kano State Government. The group said recent developments point to sustained efforts by Kwankwaso to undermine the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, allegedly to protect personal interests rather than the collective interest of the people of Kano State.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Chairman of the KPRA, Maikano Danlami, accused the former governor of seeking to influence ongoing investigations involving contracts allegedly linked to his nephew, Musa Garba, owner of Novomed Pharmaceuticals. According to the group, Musa Garba allegedly secured a N440 million contract for the supply of drugs, which is currently under investigation by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC).
The KPRA said the probe followed credible allegations of irregularities in the award and execution of the contract, raising concerns about transparency in the state’s procurement process. The alliance further alleged that additional irregularities had been uncovered, including a borehole water repairs contract valued at about N660 million, describing the revelations as damaging to the reputation of the state and indicative of deep-rooted corruption challenges in Kano’s governance system.
The group noted that tensions between Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf reportedly intensified after the governor publicly stated that he had no prior knowledge of the controversial contracts and subsequently ordered a full investigation. The KPRA, however, alleged that Kwankwaso had intensified moves to exert control over state resources, particularly amid reports of Governor Yusuf’s possible exit from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
The alliance called on Kwankwaso to desist from interfering in the affairs of the Kano State Government, stressing that his tenure as governor had ended and that governance must be allowed to proceed without undue influence.
