Some parts of Shasha market in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo state went up in flames at the early hours of Tuesday.

The sad incident which occurred at about 4:00 am this morning started from one of the shops in the market as a result of an electrical surge when power was restored in the area.

Correspondent Kunle Ojo reports that the Deputy Director, Oyo State Fire Service, Moshood Adewuyi, who confirmed the unfortunate incident explained that six roles of shops which were estimated to about 50 shops were razed, while goods and property worth millions of naira destroyed.

He stressed that the firefighters sent to the market to curtail the spread of the inferno were faced with challenges of accessibility into the market due to poor market layout.

Adewuyi revealed that his men met the fire well lighted adding that they were able to curtail the spread of the inferno with the support of officers from the state security outfit codenamed Operation Burst.

He blamed some of the shops' owners for their negligence adding that the incident could have been prevented.

Adewuyi appealed to residents to be more careful, especially at this period.
