FCCPC Inaugurates Joint Market Monitoring Taskforce

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, has inaugurated the Joint Market Monitoring Taskforce, an initiative aimed at protecting Nigerian consumers from substandard, harmful, and counterfeit products.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on behalf of the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the Commission, Mr. Tunji Bello, Director of Surveillance and Investigations, Boladale Adeyinka, stressed the urgent need for consumer protection in light of current economic challenges. She noted that more than ever, Nigerians must get value for their money.
Adeyinka explained that markets across the country have seen a concerning increase in unsafe and fake goods. She added that the Commission is empowered by the FCCPA to remove such hazardous products from circulation and clamp down on deceptive, unfair, and anti-competitive practices. The new taskforce, according to the Commission, will work closely with market executives and union leaders to boost enforcement efforts and ensure better accountability.
Phase one of the initiative kicks off in four major markets within the Federal Capital Territory, Wuse Market, Utako Market, Garki International Market, and Garki Modern Market. Adeyinka confirmed that terms of reference have already been shared with taskforce members, who have committed to supporting the initiative. She also encouraged the public to report any violations of consumer protection laws through the Commission’s complaint platforms, including email, hotlines, and social media.
In his remarks, Chairman of Garki Market, Paul Nnamani, commended the FCCPC for what he described as a bold and timely intervention. He pledged to inform traders about the taskforce’s objectives and ensure full compliance. Other market leaders also voiced their support, urging the Commission to prioritize stakeholder engagement, regular monitoring, and continuous feedback throughout the lifespan of the initiative.
