Traders and residents of popular Molete Market area in Ibadan, Oyo state capital are still mourning and lamenting the loss of lives from an inferno which occurred as a result of a burnt petrol tanker in the area on Saturday night. The atmosphere in and around 'Molete' was sober throughout early today when galaxy news visited the area as sympathizers as well as those whose shops and vehicles were burnt, were seen milling around. The inferno is said to have been caused when the fuel tanker lost its break before falling off and catching fire at the popular Molete junction. Most of those who died are said to be traders selling their wares along the roadside. Eyewitnesses put the casualty figures at seventy while another eyewitness who is an okada operator said corpses of those who died from the inferno were initially deposited inside two commercial buses after the incident on Saturday night before they were taken out for burial. Many of those who died were those who initially took a refuge inside some nearby shops when the fire started but unfortunately the fire caught up with them while inside the shops. No fewer than seventeen vehicles were affected in the inferno with majority of them severely burnt beyond repairs. It was also observed that no fewer than thirty shops and some old buildings in the area were either completely or partially razed. The state Governor, Abiola Ajimobi is said to have already visited the scene of the accident, although government reaction was being awaited by press time. As at the time galaxy news left the scene of the incident, officials of the state fire service and that of state transport management authority were still managing situation at the scene of the accident while the fire fighters were still keeping vigil on the carcass of the burnt tanker. Security operatives were equally seen at the scene, controlling the crowd at the scene of the accident.
