The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, recently swore in 17 lawyers as new Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SANs, as the 2014-2015 legal year commenced.

The event which held at the main auditorium of the Supreme Court complex, Abuja, was witnessed by Supreme Court justices, members of the Body of Benchers, other jurists, lawyers, as well as friends, family members and well-wishers of recipients.

Speaking at the occasion, Justice Mukhta stressed the significance of the past legal year which she noted was marked by great developments and witnessed significant growth in the Nigerian Judiciary.

Mukhtar said that in the course of the 2013/2014 legal year, the Supreme Court addressed one thousand two hundred and eighty-eight cases.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukhtar has assured that the judiciary will continue to remain impartial in the discharge of its duties in accordance with the judicial oath in the country.

The Chief Justice also noted that the level of delay in the dispensation of justice in Nigeria is disturbing and has over the years needed attention.

In a remark, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Mohammed Adoke observed that lawyers are no longer according judges the usual courtesy and respect they deserve.

He however, charged the newly appointed SANs to lead by example and conduct themselves in the manner befitting of the rank.

Also speaking, the President of Nigerian Bar Association(NBA) Augustine Alegeh (SAN) said the association has introduced stamp and seal policy as part of efforts to rid the profession of impostors.
