CAF change AFCON calendar, increase teams to 24

The Confederation of African Football has reached a consensus to make radical changes to the football calendar. the African governing body outlined some of the decisions taken at their symposium in Rabat, Morocco.


 

One of the key resolutions is the shift from January/February to June/July for the Africa Cup of Nations to align with the European calendar. They also resolved to increase the participating teams from the current 16 to 24 from the next edition billed for Cameroon in 2019.

"The Committee advocated the establishment of a working group to work on the implementation of the resolutions and propose short, medium and long term implementation timetables. However, a consensus emerged on a number of issues raised by the working groups;
