Save Democracy Protest Grounds Abuja
Nigerians are assembed in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, for mass action - Save Democracy Protest - to agitate against recent activities of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, perceived to be threatening democracy and credibility of the 2027 general elections.
The Save Democracy protest, a mega mass protest, is being organized by leaders of the opposition African Democratic Congress, ADC, in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, on Wednesday.
They are protesting INEC’s deleting of Senator David Mark, ADC National Chairman, and other members of the ADC NWC from the commission’s website.
At the Maitama Round About where the protesters are gathering, ADC members were seen carrying placards of different inscriptions, calling for the resignation of the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, who they have branded incompetent to deliver a credible elections in 2027.
The protesters, who include members of the Obidient Movement, the kwankwasiyya Movement and other groups, are also calling on the judiciary to allow Nigerians breath by adjudicating fairly on electoral matters.
Director General of the Obidient Movement, Tanko Yunusa, said the protest is to drive home their demand of allowing conducive political atmosphere for all players and political parties in the buildup to the 2027 General Elections.
He said nobody can intimidate them and that they will not allow intimidation from any quarters.
He described INEC’s delisting of the ADC leadership as an “April fool” given to Nigerians on April one.
He said that decision must not stand.
A renowned human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, is also participating in the Save Democracy mass protest.
ADC big wigs are expected to join the rally which is expected to move through the city and terminate at the INEC Headquarters.
